When you begin practising yoga, whenever possible, it is always worth attempting to create a separate area in which to perform your routines. A simple space to practise your yoga is beneficial because it is an outward reflection of your inner commitment to the self improvement path. It also sets up an area where the atmosphere can come to reflect and enhance your own positive mental state. This will in turn support and motivate you on a subtle level.
Decide on your space
Find a suitable location in your own home and decorate the space simply without too many distractions but keep the colours neutral. Candles are good lighting sources and there should be a carpeted floor or you can do without this if you are using a thick yoga mat.
What to wear
Comfortable loose fitting clothing is the best option when you are getting into unfamiliar and strange body positions. You will need to feel unrestricted in your movement and therefore an elasticated waistband would be useful. White cotton is the best natural fabric to wear and being barefooted is necessary as you will only slip during your practise if you wear socks on your feet! White is a good colour for the spirit. Some teachers will also recommend covering the head with a cotton cloth for enhancing the mental state but this isn't necessary to start with.
Using a yoga mat
If you are not working on a carpeted floor and instead using a wooden floor or some other surface you should invest in a good thick yoga mat. This will ensure suitable padding from the hard surface and protect your elbows and knees from sustained pressure whilst in the various asanas or positions. If you haven't got a mat handy then use a thick blanket as a temporary measure.
Practising meditation
A shawl or light blanket again natural fibres is often recommended if you are combining yoga with some form of meditation practise. The body will cool off after you have performed your yoga. The shawl will cover the shoulders and spine and provide extra warmth and comfort during your mental focus sessions.
