Backaches are mainly caused by a misalignment of the spine which in turn are caused by bad posture or injury brought about by things like sudden movements or carrying excess weights. The best course of action in treatment of back pain is to stretch and rest the spine, allowing it to realign itself as much as possible. Many people resort to costly medical treatments like painkillers but these end up making the body more toxic and only treat the symptoms, not the cause. Here are two simple and safe yoga poses that will likely give backache sufferers real relief and should be tried before anything else.
1. Stand with feet together. Interlock the fingers with palms facing upwards and rest the hands on top of the head. Inhale slowly and deeply, raising your heels off the ground and stretching your hands out above your head as far as they will go comfortably. Look up at your hands and hold the pose for a count to ten. Then exhale and slowly return to the standing position with your hands back on top of your head. The effect of this spine-stretching exercise will be multiplied if you mentally "feel" the stretch releasing all the tension and bringing your spine back in alignment. Repeat the exercise ten times.
2. Lie face down on a hard surface like a carpet on the floor or on a hard bed. Prop your chin up with your hands, elbows on the carpet and making sure that you are comfortable but feel the spine stretched. Then adjust your position so that you feel the main pressure of the stretch on your mid back, not the lower back. Hold this position for five or ten minutes. This is an excellent exercise for the spine and for backache relief and can be repeated as many times as you like during the day. It is suggested that you repeat it at least twice daily.
