Use Yoga to Heal Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder basically characterized by inadequate time of good quality sleep. Insomnia can be primary or secondary. Primary insomnia is not related to any medical condition, or is commonly caused by stress, anxiety, depression and incidences of loss. On the other hand, secondary insomnia is failure to maintain the sleeping state due to certain illnesses such as asthma, arthritis, heart failure, and sometimes, effects of pain medications. Insomnia can also be acute or short term insomnia, and chronic or long term insomnia. When the difficulty of sleeping is experienced for 3 weeks and longer, medical consult is already necessary.

The best management for insomnia is treating the underlying cause. Since stress is one of the most common causes of insomnia experienced by almost all age group, stress relieving options are greatly used to get a good night sleep. Nowadays, yoga is one of the most famous practices to relieve stress, get a good night sleep, and be healthy.

"Yoga" is a Sanskrit term which means union. Originated in India, yoga is the union of the mind body and spirit. Over time, as practice differs, yoga became a system of breathing and body movements to relieve stress. Yoga does not relax the body, it also wakes it up through flexibility. The practice of yoga involves the whole body as breathing, concentration and movements are all related. After all the contortions and poses, the body relaxes with corresponding slow heart rates. As these events happen, muscle contractions diminish and they begin to relax.

Yes, according to experts, yoga really helps to get a good night sleep with yoga's stimulatory effect on the brain and the whole nervous system. Yoga allows better blood circulation in the brain which normalizes the sleep cycle. Furthermore, yoga promotes elimination of toxins from the body that revitalizes the whole body until the cellular degree. With breathing exercises, more oxygen enters the body and promotes a mind free from troubles. According to researches, a minute of yoga practice is equal to a minute of the number of sleep required.

If you are an insomniac and plans to enroll in a yoga class, you might as well ask your instructor for the following poses specially designed to solve your sleeping problems.

  1. Ashtanga or the power yoga, this pose is worth doing for at least 3 times a week.
  2. The three part breath, best done before going to sleep for it promotes peace of mind.
  3. Ananda Balasana or the happy baby pose, this results to relaxation of the lower back and hips.
  4. The corpse pose. According to practitioners, this promotes the yogic sleep. The yogic sleep precedes the actual sleep. According to yoga experts, this is state is something not easily done, it may take weeks for someone to perfect this pose.
  5. Halasana. Also called as the plow-pose, this specially addresses insomnia for it concentrates on relaxation and breathing.
  6. The Sukhasana is done cross-legged to achieve relaxed breathing.
  7. The Adho Mukha Svanasana or the down-ward facing dog position supports flexibility and promotes breathing.

Unlike any other stress relieving practices, yoga does not require any special equipment and it can be done anywhere when you are already familiar with the techniques. Aside from that, yoga also believes that no one is better than anyone else, isn't it less stressful knowing that?

Simple Yoga Pose to Relieve Tension

What does it mean to relax the mind and body? Do you put on the television to relax? Do you prefer to sit in silence and relive the events of the day? For me the television can add stress and anxiety to my body. And silence is a foreign word to many. Between young children, traffic, cell phones...you get the idea, silence can be tough. A different approach to relaxation would be to learn how to do this yoga pose to unwind at the end of the day. You owe it to yourself, your body and your mind.

Are you experiencing any of these signs of tension?

  • Body stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Digestive problems
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic anxiety
  • Irritability

A classic yoga relaxation position called the corpse pose is an alternative solution to softening your stiffness and easing your anxiety by allowing you to pause and slow down. Relaxation in this position is achieved through visualization, conscious breathing techniques and active involvement in the pose. The corpse pose looks like the easiest of all the yoga poses but it actually is one of the hardest. There is a fine balance keeping the mind focused on the here and now and actively involved in the success of this pose, yet letting go of the body and feeling the calm in all your muscles and organs. You are actively releasing tension with this pose. Your mind needs to stay present and your body needs to stay still.

Lay on your back with your legs straight and your feet about hip distance apart. Straighten your arms and place your hands slightly away from your hips. Relax your head on the ground and close your eyes. Soften each part of your body by concentrating your mind on the loosening of your muscles and organs. Let your mind work throughout your body: start at your toes, up your legs, through your pelvis, abdomen, upper chest, down your arms, into your fingers and then back to your shoulders, neck and head. Work through the body tensing each section for a few seconds and then releasing, allowing a deeper surrender to relaxation.

As you let your mind flow through the different parts of your body pause when your mind finds rigidity and stiffness. Concentrate on softening that part of your body while taking in several deep breaths. Hold the relaxation point as long as it feels comfortable.

The head has its own set of tension points. The mouth needs to open slightly and take the tongue away from the roof of the mouth. Release your jaw muscles and the back of your throat. Once your mind moves to your eyes rest the strain. Let your eyes sense the restfulness. It can feel as if your eyes are sinking into your head. This is a sign that you are giving them a break and releasing any tension in the muscles of your eyes. Let the forehead loosen, ease the tightness. Soften the skin on your face and your scalp.

Once each part of your body has physically relaxed it is time to stay as still as possible not letting the outside world in. Focus on keeping the body still and releasing any further tension. This act of concentrating will keep your thoughts inside yourself and further deepen the tranquility you are striving for. Breathe deeply throughout this pose and keep your mind alert. Observe any sensations that your body feels. That is the feeling of stiffness loosening and anxiety easing.

Discharge your emotional tension as well while in this unrestricted state. Give yourself permission to let go. Your mind and body deserve it. As you continue to deepen this relaxation your body will feel heavy as if it is sinking into the ground. It is a very powerful force to relinquish anxiety and stress. Your body will tell you when it is time to come out of this pose. Your breathing will start to feel energized. Your eyes will feel rested and your body will feel rejuvenated. Roll on your side before you get up to avoid any unnecessary strain on your back. Sit up for a couple of minutes relishing in the true feeling of bodily relaxation.

This pose can be done by anyone who can get down on the ground. It is an excellent tension reliever that only takes about ten minutes but can wipe away years of stiffness and anxiety if practiced consistently. This pose alone will improve your health.

Hatha Yoga Tip

The best hatha yoga tip I ever received, was from a yoga master who understood the inner workings of life, karma and reincarnation. Employing this tip is essential if you are going to extract the full benefits of a yoga practice. Without this piece of wisdom, hatha yoga becomes just a series of physical movements and exercises. The tip is that all yoga should be practiced with the Witnessing Consciousness active.

This is really more than just the best yoga tip, this is an essential yoga guideline. Yoga means, to join or yolk, and the joining that is being referred to, is the merging of your consciousness with the Universal Consciousness. This is the true purpose of yoga. To bring you to the doorstep of Infinity, so that you can realize the true Oneness of Reality.

Yoga includes many dimensions, and of these hatha yoga is just one. This dimension is considered the physical aspect of yoga practice, but if done while employing the Witnessing Consciousness, this physical practice becomes spiritual and much more. So what exactly is meant by this tip? Let's discuss the details of that below.

The Witnessing Consciousness is the act of simply standing apart and watching that which is taking place. In other words, to have a third person perspective of what is happening in your life, within and without, and using this observation as a source for self study. This observation is pure simple awareness. It should be without judgment or criticism, and it should be maintained as best you can from moment to moment. Another way of describing this state is that it is the act of being in the world, but not being of the world.

So, as you practice your hatha yoga poses and routines, keep this awareness active. Do your yoga and watch yourself doing it like you are watching a movie. Stay alert to the three dimensions of your being. The physical, emotional and mental. This detached, passive awareness will allow the content of consciousness to come out, reveal itself and be purged. That cleansing will then allow you to have space and silence within, which are the necessary ingredients for Truth to blossom.

This important tip though extends far beyond your hatha yoga practice as well. Not only during your physical practice should you practice this watching, but you should continue at all other times as well. No one is really able to successfully be conscious throughout all twenty-four hours of the day, but the amount of time you can stay aware is perhaps the best way to measure your spiritual progress.

The person who can maintain their awareness ninety percent of the time is going to be much more spiritually advanced than one who is only aware only five percent of the time. In fact, this metric is probably the best measure of the spiritual level of a person. Putting this tip to use, will certainly change your life. You will have to make adjustments in order to practice such vigilance and the more you practice it, the more positive changes you will notice start happening.

A great time to practice this tip is, of course, while doing hatha yoga poses. This is because hatha yoga can be done without excessive mental activity. This then leaves awareness available for the task of self observation. Of course, there are hatha yoga exercises that suggest bringing the mind and attention to various regions in the body, as you do the pose, but if you can, try to maintain some free energy and awareness for self observation. In fact, I would say that maintaining the Witnessing Consciousness is more important, than the mental requirements of a particular pose.

Yoga For Your Immunity System

With the H1N1 virus becoming a global epidemic just after the SARS scare a few years ago, people are starting to find ways to build up their immunity system from taking tablets to drinking herbal tonics and elixirs. However a simple way to help build up one's immunity system is actually through a practice of yoga.

Stress has been shown to be a great contributor to weaken the immune system greatly. With a combination of asana practice, pranayama, meditation and relaxation, yoga can help to balance and strengthening the immune system as it reduces the stress hormones that compromise the immune system. A daily practice that combines breath with movement will also help strengthen the respiratory & circulatory systems stimulating the lymphatic system to move toxins out of the body and bring more oxygenated blood to the various organs ensuring their healthful function. Yoga also generates a balanced energy which is the key energy required for the immune system.

Looking closer at the immune system, it consists of the thymus glands, the spleen, lymph node and other organs. These organs are involved in generating & circulating immune cells and antibodies. Yoga poses that twist and compress these organs will help to massage & stimulate these organs allowing more immune cells & antibodies to be generated. A few postures that will help stimulate the immune system are the Tortoise pose ( Kurmasana) that helps stimulate the thymus glands, Inversions & forward bends such as Downward Facing Dog ( Adha Mukha Svanasana) help to drain the sinuses, Chest & lung openers such as Camel pose (Ustrasana) and Cobra Pose ( Bhujangasana) which also help to flush out the lungs & Restorative yoga poses such as Corpse Pose (Shavasana) and Shoulder Stand ( Shasangasana) which help calm the nervous system down and strengthen the body's immune response.

The thymus gland also corresponds to the fourth chakra and these postures if combined with fourth chakra sounds such as its mantra sound of "yum" or vowel sound of "ay" will improve the immune response. Yogic breathing practices such as Kapalbahti ( breath of fire) or just slow deep Ujjayi breathing done in chest opening postures will not only help to stimulate the thymus gland but also induce a sense of calmness and relaxation that will help boost the immune system further.

Yoga to Increase Height

A good grow taller program should include a stretching routine. If you don't know any good routines, look no further than yoga to increase height. If you are not familiar yoga, it is an exercise philosophy in which the mind, body, and spirit comes together as one. The practice of yoga involves poses that stretch and strengthen the body. There are a variety of poses that hit the entire body once you get through a whole posing sequence.

There are certain exercises that help you grow taller by improving your posture and decompressing the spine. The spine has soft cartilage between the vertebrae. This cartilage gets compressed like a sponge due to gravity. There are stretching exercises that alleviate this compression to make your spine longer. Posture improvement also helps you grow taller. Posture issues can arise from muscle weaknesses or years of postural neglect. You can use yoga for height increase because it addresses all of the issues above.

The yoga poses are categorized into different groups. There are seated poses that are suitable for beginners and focus on flexibility. Twisting poses involve twisting your waist. These exercises are great for maintaining spine flexibility. Core strengthening poses strengthen the core which helps with posture. Forward bending pose are good for spine flexibility and decompression. There are many groups of poses and each group contains many different exercises.

If you need a stretching routine, you can employ yoga for height increase. There is much more to yoga philosophy than stretching, but you can incorporate many of their ideas into your stretching routine. You can find posing illustrations online. Combine this with good nutrition and sleep, and you'll have a solid routine.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga goes beyond remedial yoga. It is the pathway to a very deep and profound self healing. Remedial Yoga works with people who have had specific injuries and helps them rebuild the function where the injury was whilst keeping the rest of their body mobilised. Restorative Yoga is also for people who have been ill or injured and are in their recovery period - but very specifically it is for people who are highly stressed and recognise that their levels of stress are affecting their body and their health badly.
A typical example of someone who would benefit from Restorative Yoga is a person who is becoming burnt out through their lifestyle and the particular demands it has. They probably would have been chronically stressed for some time and their bodies will be giving a lot of signals saying that it is getting too tired and depleted to carry on like this. They may have been told they have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME or fibromyalgia and warned against the perils of carrying on their current lifestyle.
As the body moves into this chronic state of stress and the systems such as the digestive system, the immune system and the cardio vascular system get more and more overloaded they stop working well. Bit by bit the person finds that they have a whole series of small health problems which then escalate into something more serious. For example, Angela got divorced 6 years ago and because she had to work so hard to try to keep up payments on her mortgage she was constantly worried and scared - but also physically tired running a job, seeing to her children and grandchild and keeping the house and garden under control. A couple of years later her mother became ill and needed nursing and attention and Angela found the energy from somewhere to give her mother the support she needed. However that was when she had her first asthma attack. After that she was always a bit worried that she would have another one and noticed that she quite often felt dizzy. Her doctor told her she needed to take it easier but that seemed out of the question to Angela given what was happening in her life. The following year she caught a very bad cold and that turned to bronchitis. Leaving her weak and ever more fatigued she then caught a series of flu viruses throughout that winter and the next. In summer she tended to feel better but as soon as winter began she would start to feel low and ill. She began to notice that she was sensitive to wheat and that her tummy didn't quite cope with eating late at night or very spicy dishes anymore. It just seemed to struggle to cope with whatever she put in it. Her energy got even lower and her spirits just wouldn't lift as she looked forward to a life of coping and struggling against feeling so poorly. Her doctor told her she was depressed and prescribed antidepressants for her. She also discovered that her blood pressure was higher than it had ever been before and was warning her like the red light flashing on the dashboard of the car - her petrol was about to run out!
Angela hated taking the anti-depression medication and really wanted to do something to help herself. This was when she came across Restorative Yoga and also began to see a herbal specialist who gave her some gentle natural remedies to support her very tired body and weakened systems as she did her new yoga practice. Restorative Yoga enabled her body to find a place of rest and balance again. For a short time every week Angela let her body be supported and very gently put into positions that opened her rib cage, stretched her spine and eased her digestive system. She learnt how to mediate while she was resting in the various poses that were right for her body. She also learnt how to breathe fully, yet gently, using all her lung capacity. Her body, which had been deprived of enough oxygen for so long with her shallow breathing pattern, responded very quickly as it absorbed the vital energy in the air. Her skin tone improved, her digestion strengthened and her heart rate calmed down as her body's nervous system realised that it didn't have to be in fight or flight mode every day. She taught her body that sometimes it is OK to be working at high gear - but when that time is over it is time to go back to a balanced state of mind and body.

Yoga for Infertility

Unexplained infertility is when a couple fails to conceive following one year of unprotected intercourse and when all infertility tests show no abnormalities.
Unexplained infertility is very frustrating. Affected couples often go through numerous invasive and painful procedures. But the truth is that many of these couples have normal fertility, just taking longer to conceive. It is called sub-fertility and the purpose of therapy is to shorten the time of conception. Of course, you can start on fertility drugs, intrauterine insemination or injectable drugs but they all have so many side effects and can be even dangerous for your health.
In the last 5 years research have found that stress is a major reason for people's inability to conceive especially if their medical tests are normal. Stress influences hormonal and endocrine function, tightened the internal muscles (in the pelvis and around the uterus) and stimulate sympathetic nervous system (the fight and flight response system).
Over 80% of couples with unexplained infertility eventually conceive if they find a way to relax properly. Just going for a holiday is often not enough relaxation to be able to conceive. It has to be something more serious than just a holiday.
Special yoga postures can be a great alternative for people who trying to get pregnant but can't due to unexplained infertility.
Here are some for you.
1. Butterfly Pose. Sit on a blanket with the heels and soles of your feet together. Pull your feet in toward your body so that they are comfortable close. Rest your hands on the top of your feet. Close your eyes and focus on the organs inside your pelvis. Feel the blood flow inside the pelvis and gradually relax the pelvis internal muscles.
2. Squat Pose. Stand with your feet comfortably apart, placing your hands on your thighs for support. Bend your knees and slowly lower your buttocks down towards the floor. Clasp your palms and fingers together in front of your heart. Place elbows between knees and use your elbows to spread your knees apart.
3. Pigeon pose. Kneel down supporting yourself with your forearms. Crawl your right knee forward between your hands and slide your right heel toward your left hip. Extend your left leg back behind you, keeping the top of your foot and knee facing the floor. Repeat the pose on the other side.
4. Simple twist. Sit on a blanket with your legs crossed in front of you. Place your right hand behind you on your blanket with the base of your palm by your buttocks. Press into your palm and lengthen your spine. Reach your left hand across your body and rest it on your right knee. Inhale deeply. As you release your breath, begin twisting your torso to the right beginning with your waist. Continue twisting through your chest, shoulder, heck, and chin. Take another deep breath and try to twist a little father.
5. Pelvic tilt. Lie back on your blanket with your feet on the floor and your knees pointing towards the ceiling. Lengthen your neck and allow your shoulders to soften. Your arms rest at your sides. Lift your buttocks off the floor as high as you can, pressing your pubic bone towards the ceiling. Take a few long, slow breaths. Then begin to lower your spine, releasing one vertebra at a time until your buttocks are resting comfortably on the floor. Repeat the movement 5 times.
These 5 yoga poses can have significant effects on your ability to conceive and bear a healthy child because they play a major role in evoking a deep internal relaxation. The kind of relaxation which is necessary for people who suffer from unexplained infertility.

Stress Busting Yoga

Stress is what our bodies and minds feel when they are confronted with situations that they are not used to and it is a given in our modern existence. Rather than try to escape it, we need to find a way to exist with it and not let it harm us. The need is urgent because stress-related health issues are a major cause of illness and suffering for children and adults alike.

Yoga helps us to deal with stress at many levels. The physical postures, or asanas, strengthen and tone not only the muscles but the nerves too, making our bodies stronger, healthier and more under our control. The breathing exercises, or pranayama, connect our bodies to the cosmic energy, or prana, surrounding us by giving us a very intimate awareness of the one act that keeps us alive-breathing. Most of us breathe reflexively and therefore are not aware of how easy it is to relax by doing it consciously and as modern medical science knows, deep, rhythmic breathing relaxes the body like little else can. Finally, yogic meditation teaches us to harness our chaotic thought processes and mind and gain control over it rather than the other way around. For many, "mastering our thoughts" is a unique idea but once we learn how to do it correctly, we will find a universe in which we are in complete control of our emotions and therefore our reactions to the things that happen to us.

Yoga is a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary science of living in the most stress-free way possible. It will not make the stress in our lives disappear but it will teach us how to react emotionally, physically and spiritually to stressful events without letting them harm us or those around us.

Yoga Unlocks Beauty

What qualities do you long to perceive in yourself? Do you feel that you can only change 'that' much of you? If this is so, you are not yet familiar with the fundamental truth of Yoga: "The body is the temple of the spirit, conceived in the image of its maker". Through consistent yoga practice, students soon become aware of the infinite power and beauty of their own individual body. Indeed others around will be quick to perceive "something different" in you- be sure to share your secret with them. Yoga's breathing, stretching and meditation exercises promote optimal physical and mental health that shows.

Yoga's ingenious postures trigger positive changes in your metabolism and functioning of your endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, reproductive, and urinary systems by direct stimulation of organs and glands. The Shoulder Stand stimulates your thyroid gland, having an important direct positive effect on weight regulation. Yoga breathing techniques (pranayama) are designed to trigger burning of excess body fat, to enhance detoxification processes and expulsion of toxins through our breath, and prove extremely effective for tension-relief, promoting a relaxed state and elevated awareness. Charismatic people transmit beauty through this irresistible combination of positivity, humility and self-confidence.

Positive changes in your mood and stability, and improved well-being, are essential factors contributing to your choice of foods that have a desirable effect on your organism and keep a healthy chemical balance in your brain. Awareness of your body's response to different foods is crucial in unmasking food allergies that place an unnecessary burden on your organism.

Toning of your muscles from head to toes is achieved in yoga by holding poses for extended time durations (as with the Locust for firming your legs, the Bust Exercise for firming and developing your chest and bust, or the Bow for firming flabby areas of your back), by attaining postures in slow motion (as with the Slow Motion Firming for intensive firming of the abdomen and thighs), and by executing fast paced routines in a rhythmic flow to encourage flux and reposition of somatic energies (as with the Sun Salutations). Yoga breathing techniques are extremely powerful in developing your abdominal wall.

As well as working on your figure, yoga exercises promote beauty of your complexion, as does the Lion by firming the muscles of your face and neck, and healthy appearance of your hair, as does the Scalp Exercise. Still, yoga goes further to enhance your beauty. Its techniques, inspired to some degree by stretches seen in our feline friends, will impart unprecedented flexibility to your spine, and this you can maintain throughout your life. An ancient yogic adage claims "You are as young as your spine is flexible". As you develop an erect posture and gain poise and balance in your movement through yoga exercises like Rishi's Posture or the Dancer's Posture, you will feel a youthful spring return beauty to your movements, this blended with growing confidence and stability.

In terms of evolutionary theory it makes perfect sense: healthy in and out is beautiful, the law of the fittest. It is no secret that a great part of admired personalities turn to yoga practice and meditation for health, beauty, inspiration and clarity and alertness of the mind. You too owe yourself to embarque on this journey to your unprecedented wellness.

Healing Power of Yoga

Yoga is a great helper for the healthy body and mind but it is also a great benefit for those bodies and minds that need healing. If your body is healthy, your first line of defense is to keep it that way with healthy habits and good maintenance. In this, yoga is a major help as it keeps your body well tuned along with your mental health and immune system. One of the main benefits of the yoga poses is the alignment of the spine which allows energy to flow naturally and freely throughout the body. Regular practice also helps the body purge itself of toxins that pollute it via all of the bad stuff we eat, drink and breathe, sometimes even without knowing it.

If your body is not healthy, yoga is great medicine and practiced correctly can help the body heal even faster. For instance, if you are overweight, yoga can treat your joints, jelly belly and heart gently and tone them up more permanently than any other exercise program. Even if you cannot do any of the standard physical poses, or asanas, you can practice yoga with your eye, your breathing and your mind! It is possible to simply tense your muscles in a way that exercises them and if you consciously choose the muscles to tense one by one, you can actually achieve a lot physically without actually "moving" your body much. Yoga should obviously never displace your regular doctor so please do consult with them.

Yoga is taken very seriously in many parts of the world and a lot of people devote their lives exclusively to its practice. Some of them can do amazing things and western doctors have recorded some yogis (yoga practitioners) stop their heartbeat and breathing for extended periods of time, feats that modern medicine deems "impossible"! While these feats illustrate the phenomenal power yoga has over the body, for very serious yogis, they are unimportant and merely signposts on the way to spiritual enlightenment.

Getting Into Yoga

Yoga is a form of fitness that has been practiced over the years. It is used to give therapy to the mind and body by practicing long poses that are held and perfected. Yoga takes lots of patience and time and practice. It can strengthen your mind and body while keeping you healthy. Yoga has been used to treat many ailments and seems to help the body and mind overcome some of these troubles. With all of the benefits of using yoga it is no wonder that it is widely popular and used by pregnant women, seniors and physically fit athletic women.

Many people try yoga to distress. It has been marketed toward not only fitness but distressing. In this world where stress can surround us it is important to know that something like yoga is available to take advantage of. The poses in yoga have been proven to unclog the mind, and elevate regular day to day stresses caused by work, commuting, money and family.

Not only is yoga excellent to become stress-free or at least manage it better, it is also a fun form of exercise. Many people get bored with the gym, aerobic and spinning classes, especially when years go by and the same form of exercises is always used. For those who do get bored they may seek something else to do, some try different classes or join sport programs but many turn to yoga.

Yoga can seem intimidating at first. It is a different kind of exercise and you can`t hide on a machine. The poses look awkward and hard and not to mention it seems like you have to be really flexible. And you can`t just show up to a class unprepared, you have to have the yoga mat and a yoga outfit, it leaves many wondering what all the fuss is about. And when you do show up to a class, you are expected to do the poses in front of everyone which can be humiliating for some.

Although yoga might seem hard to get into at first, many people will agree that once they try it they love it. The yoga poses get easier with practice and the body even becomes more flexible as your muscles get used to the poses. The mat and clothes are only used to keep you comfortable, when your hands and feet are pressed against the floor or when you`re holding yourself in poses where you don`t want your top swinging around your face while hanging upside down.

There are many ways you can fit yoga into your life. You can buy DVD`s individually or in packages and sets. You can also attend a yoga class at a gym, where they might have beginner classes and intermediate ones held separately. You can also check out special yoga only gyms that specialize in that type of exercise only.

Yoga teachers have to be certified and are professionals who can help you develop your poses and work you to your full potential. The exercise benefits and long term distressing will only leave you with mountains of positivity. If you can get over your fear of it and just indulge in the art that has many worldwide using it every day, then you too will be a yoga follower. Yoga is recommended for twenty minutes a day or if that is too much then even a few classes a week is a great start.

* Really increases the body awareness and will relieve chronic stress patterns in the body also refreshes the body by relieving muscle strain and relaxes the body centers attention, sharpens concentration, and frees the spirit.

* Studies have shown that hatha yoga can relieve the symptoms of several common and potentially life-threatening illnesses such as arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chronic fatigue, diabetes, AIDS, asthma and obesity. Many believe it even fends off the ravages of old age.

The Hatha Yoga it not like an aerobic exercise though it uses mainly every body muscle. It can help to develop and improve balance, coordination and a feeling of being centered. The limbs are used like free weights and the body's center of gravity is moved to create resistance. Over time, the limbs become stronger and the focus then shifts to endurance as the Astana's are held for increasing periods of time. The hatha would make a great exercise routine for the elderly people who still have physical use of their bodies. The exercise would not be harmful to the body.

To read more about Hatha Yoga and its benefits, I have just uncovered a very interesting book on the subject. It had been out of print for over 60 years until I discovered this unspoilt and undiluted information product. I have brought it into the 21st century without sacrificing the script in any shape or form.

Yoga Optimises Your Endocrine System and Thyroid Gland Function

Yoga practice aims for internal balance. Fundamentally this involves optimisation of your endocrine system. Yoga postures and breathing techniques, in conjunction with meditation practices and chanting, stimulate your endocrine glands to enhance their functioning. This is achieved by internal massage on muscles and spine, by internal massage through sounds, by improving circulation, by stimulation of body areas which have connections to specific organs as demonstrated through reflexology techniques, focusing on chakras, and exercising the triple warmer muscles of your thorax.

Your endocrine system consists of glands that release chemical messages called 'hormones' to regulate your organism's functions. Hormones are involved in growth and development, tissue function, metabolism (affecting weight regulation and hunger), and in your mood. They play a role in your experiencing relaxation or stress, pleasure or frustration, and fear or joy. Scientific experiments prove the relationship between our moods as reaction to external stimuli or circumstances, as with film themes, and hormone secretion. We know that hormonal imbalances affect our mood, and thus our decision-making, in undesirable ways. Consequences of our day-to-day choices will inevitably amount to change the direction of our lives. In this light, Yoga's beneficial effect on our endocrine system is of paramount importance to all regardless of age or gender.

Your body 'chakras' or energy foci keep close relation with your internal glands that constitute your endocrine system. Yogis understand that when the pineal gland and the pituitary gland (or hypophysis) receive sufficient energy, they will channel impulses from the other endocrine glands in synchronicity to optimise rhythms for good health. Your pineal gland corresponds to your 'third eye' and is linked to your developing transcendental wisdom. Yoga meditation techniques powerfully stimulate this gland. Your pituitary gland, at the base of your brain, relates to inspiration and intuition. Its functioning is enhanced by The Archway yoga posture. A very pleasant practice to promote emotional balance through your endocrine system is the Kundalini Yoga Sat Nam (True Self) meditation exercise using breathing and chanting techniques.

Your thyroid gland, found below your larynx, or below Adam's apple in men, is responsible for your body's energy burning rate, and for your body's sensitivity to other hormones. It produces the thyroid hormones Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3), involved in regulating your metabolism, and in the growth and rate of function of other bodily systems. It is controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. In Yoga, it is connected to your chakra visshudda, which relates to your communication skills. Your thyroid's functions are directly linked to your mood. When this gland becomes overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism) we experience undesirable effects. Excessive thyroid hormonal secretion produces nervousness, irritability, excessive hunger, palpitations, laboured breathing and an abnormally fast digestion. An underactive thyroid results in our apathy and tiredness. The inverted yoga posture Head Stand greatly enhances the functioning of your thyroid gland by bringing an increased amount of blood to your throat area, resulting especially helpful in execution with the Breath of Fire in Kundalini Yoga. The Throat Lotus Kriya combines exercises with powerful yoga breathing techniques to work your thyroid and parathyroid glands.

The thymus gland, also part of your endocrine system and located under your breastbone, has a central role in keeping a strong immune system. In Yoga, it is connected to youranahata chakra, relating to your capacity for loving and opening up to others. The Throat Lotus Kriya also stimulates this gland.

Your adrenal glands, sitting above your kidneys, release hormones in conjunction to stress due to our fear or frustration, and also when hipoglucemia occurs. This results in the hyperactive state of 'fight or flight'. If we don't respond to this state through movement as intended by its bodily mechanism then we enter a state of stress. These glands of your endocrine system are connected to your manipura chakra relating to power-seeking, perseverance and will-power. The Camel yoga posture enhances blood flow through your suprarenal glands.

Your gonads secrete sex hormones and affect your vitality. They connect with your svadisthana chakra in relation to pleasure, creativity and joy of life. Yoga exercises and meditation are of help to men and women experiencing changes in hormonal levels due to aging. Women dealing with the perimenopause or menopause find relief from stress, and production of stress hormones by their bodies is reduced. Yoga's inverted postures, as the Downward Facing Dog, direct blood towards our pineal, pituitary, thyroid and hypothalamus glands. This can help stabilise severe hormonal fluctuations. It is important here to note contraindications to yoga's inverted postures for people with high blood pressure, hyperactive thyroid, Graves disease, glaucoma, and detached retina. If this includes you, please be sure to consult with a professional for evaluation and advice.

The invaluable benefits to be experienced through our mood and stability by engaging in yoga practice are not to be dismissed by anyone who wishes to enhance their well-being. This holds regardless of your present condition. You will undoubtedly enrich your life through these simple techniques, be it to elevate your wellness to an even higher level, or to mark the start of a rising stage that promotes healing and comfort. Whatever your situation, yoga will lead your way to unprecedented well-being.

Tips For Getting Started With Yoga

People who practice yoga regularly have a certain glow about them. They're healthy, happy, and just have a special way about them that infects everything and everyone around them for the better. This is the glow of yoga that we all strive for.

To achieve the yoga glow-like zen, we have to start somewhere. Here are a few tips and products to help you start out small, and end up happy and limber with a glow all your own.

Try using a yoga strap

Using straps can really help you get into those tougher poses that require the flexibility that you just don't have yet. The yoga strap will allow you to put the resistance where you need it. For example, you can use straps to connect one arm to the other, extend your reach from your feet, and many other tricks.

Yoga Bolsters for back support

Bolsters are firm long and narrow pillows normally filled with a dense cotton and designed specifically to help support you tummy and back during your yoga practice. Bolsters can really come in handy for poses that require a lot of core strength. Another great use for them is to put them under your knees for support as you rest

Select the right mat

Selecting a mat can be overwhelming. They come in thin, thick, cotton, short, long, and wide. For starters I'd recommend getting a skidless thick yoga mat. This will provide the comfort and stability for getting the hang of the traditional poses you'll learn right away.

Yoga Blocks

Yoga blocks come in all shapes and sizes, and are mostly used to modify a pose or to provide support for your hands and feet for those poses where you can't quite stretch to the extent you want. Blocks can bring the stretch destination closer to you until you reach your flexibility goals.

Hatha Yoga For Arthritis Pain Relief

Gentle forms of Hatha Yoga can help anyone who suffers from arthritis. Depending on the type, stage, and where arthritis is located in the body, a Yoga session will have to be modified to match the needs of the student. This can make the search for the right Yoga class, and a compassionate teacher difficult, at best.

In some advanced stages, the amount of movement must be reduced, while you hold postures; and areas of the body, where there is chronic pain, may have to be worked gently. At the same time, someone who has the beginning stages of arthritis, may feel relief from classes with flowing movements.

Some flowing styles are quite gentle, while many of them are physically demanding. One way to sort them out is to research the particular styles you are interested in. If you are in search of a style for healing purposes, there is no need to push the body with powerful, flowing movements.

Some of the more dynamic movements may have to be avoided for the sake of preventative health. One good example of taking precautions with movement is - if you have discovered arthritis in your lower back. In this case, movements, such as the "jump back" from forward bend, to plank, may cause excess shock in the lumbar spine.

Yoga sessions, where students hold postures for 20 seconds, to two minutes, usually do not teach jumping movements, which have impact on the joints. Nevertheless, it would be wise to consult with your family doctor or a physical therapist prior to taking a Yoga class. Make sure you inquire about how much warm-up time is recommended.

In this way, you will be advised about which movements will be beneficial and which movements should be avoided. If possible, get a referral to visit a competent Yoga teacher from your family doctor or physical therapist.

If you are a Yoga teacher, and you teach a therapeutic style, you should make an effort to network with local health professionals and make them aware of the services you provide. The difference between a Yoga school that is vibrant with activity, and one that is empty, is educating the community through public outreach.

One method for "testing the potential for student demand," is to have an open house and invite local health professionals as guests or as guest speakers. Do not forget to reach out to chiropractors and massage therapists. Even if attendance is light, an open house may create a professional network. Your efforts will enhance community awareness about the programs you have to offer.

Yoga and Our Link to Pain

Our connection to pain is rooted in our personal belief system. Some of us fear pain so much that we cannot think about it without creating internal anxiety. Some of us believe pain is deserved or it is the Law of Karma in practice. Others see modern medicine, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, Yoga, and alternative therapies as solutions to end pain and suffering.

Pain is many things, but our reality is based upon how we view pain. In Yoga practice, we learn to look at everything without judgment. Competent Hatha Yoga teachers instruct their students to "find their edge" while holding an asana. While practicing an asana, each student discovers the threshold on the edge of pain.

Therefore, pain tells us to back up in order to keep the body safe. As long as you do not push into postures, pain becomes a great teacher. Pain teaches us where not to go. This relationship to pain is quite different if we are suffering from a chronic or terminal illness.

In such cases, we pray for a pain-free day or even a pain-free moment. Constant pain can become a steady drone, similar to a background noise that will not leave. If our belief system is challenged by suffering, our behavior may change as well. Meditation is nearly impossible when we experience intense pain.

How can anyone find balanced or focused thought, when he or she is in pain? At this time, effective pain management solutions are often found when we combine therapies. For example: Prescribed medicine may be required, no matter how much we detest it. The reason prescription medicine might be used would be to give the body and mind some rest, peace, and sleep.

Are there side effects from prescription medicine? Yes, but not always; and suffering, without rest, is not a pain management solution. A prescription might allow you to take control of your mind in a state of less, little, or no pain. This is a good time to practice Yoga and meditation.

The next step is to keep control of the mind, by looking at pain from an optimistic viewpoint and a spiritual awakening. Even if you have been diagnosed as terminally ill, you do not deserve pain. There is a chance you will make a full recovery.

Complete recoveries happen, but if you believe you are finished, you determine your course. You have a right to a quality life until your last moment. In all cases, Yoga and meditation will help lessen pain, give us hope, restore our faith, and stabilize our thoughts.

How to Practice Your Best Yoga

No matter which form of Yoga you practice, or teach, you begin to notice talent levels. Our teachers may have instructed us not to be competitive, and to avoid judging, but that is what people do. Judging time, speed, and distance can keep you safe in traffic; just as much as judging saved primal humans, who hunted and gathered for a living.

How do we avoid making comparisons to others and move forward in our Yoga practice? The answer is to look within and find contentment in your practice. It will take time to find your way. It takes years of study to be the best you can be at anything. This is a time when taking the short cut to everything is mass marketed.

If you are told you can lose weight, permanently, in 30 days, do you believe it? This same lesson applies to Yoga and all aspects of life. To improve at anything, you must invest time in practice, study - more practice and more study. As much as advertisers might try to convince you otherwise, there is no quick fix for hard work and dedication.

In Hatha Yoga, photography and our competitive nature have created new sub-styles, which focus on being the best and winning. To be honest, sport and fitness styles have a place in Yoga and in life. Most of us have entered competition for something that we found significant. It is part of life to compete, but that only scratches the superficial surface of fitness Yoga.

The experienced Hatha practitioner begins to realize that deeper aspects may point toward Raja, Karma, Jnana, and Bhakti Yoga practice. We begin to see Yoga as a healer of many ailments. This transition usually takes years to process, even if we study under the careful guidance of a competent Yoga teacher.

As much as some humans may try to avoid it, hard work and dedication are significant parts of life. They build character and shape our way of thinking. In fact, humanity has plenty of hard work on the horizon. We can deny global warming, as we see glaciers and mountain tops melt; or we can work together toward solutions for future generations.

In life, and in every form of Yoga practice, we begin to understand that natural talent will carry us only to a finite point. In order to move beyond that point, we have to invest in research and development.

Yoga and the Seeds of Motivation

Whether you practice alone, or teach Yoga classes full of students, you are familiar with the state of inspiration you feel. Some feel that Yogic inspiration gives them guidance, in the form of a sudden jolt of intuition, while searching for a solution to a problem. Other practitioners admit that a steady Yoga practice helps their creative thinking process.

Regardless of which form of Yoga you practice, the benefits of inspiration stay with you throughout the day. Yet, how much time do we take to inspire others? If we have no inspiration, there is nothing to share. If we are inspired, but fail to motivate others, we have gathered positive energy without sharing it.

It costs you nothing to share positive energy with others. All you have to do is encourage those who need it most. This is not to be confused with excessive or insincere praise. Each person has unique talents, which can be brought out if he or she feels worthy. Therefore, sincere encouragement might create enough energy for motivation.

Motivation is the key element of inspirational energy. One might say motivation is the spark that lights the fire of inspiration. For example: Beginners may need motivation to practice Yoga, but as they become inspired, the drive to continue practicing is perpetual. This form of ageless, and everlasting energy, can be created with encouragement and education.

You cannot change the world by lecturing when it is not wanted. Each of us learns this lesson, when we raise children. Leading by example is the way parents train children. For better, or worse, the lifestyle each of us chooses can be mimicked by someone who observes our behavior.

This journey we call life is a work in progress, but all of us need a little direction at the right time. In fact, the timing of encouraging words or actions is critical. You might compare this to a teacher who leads a Hatha Yoga class. To lecture students about all that can go wrong, while practicing Downward Dog, means little if they are not practicing that exact posture at the time.

A timely physical assist, and words of encouragement, can leave positive memories in a student's mind forever. To advise them of possibilities that may never happen will often bore them. Much like life, Yoga has many lessons to offer at precisely the right time.

The significance of Yin Yoga

Don't let the name fool you. Yin yoga by name may appear to be a less strenuous form of yoga, and in comparison to styles such as ashtanga or bikram yoga, it is. But nevertheless, it is very challenging in its own way. This does not require the muscular endurance that ashtanga and bikram, rather it requires being able to hold certain positions for at least 3-5 minutes at a time. Some may hold positions for up to 20 minutes. Sounds easy, but it is far more challenging than it seems.

What is Yin Yoga?

If you were to think of the more "power" styles of yoga, such as ashtanga, as "yang" yoga, the term "yin" yoga makes perfect sense for what it concentrates on. Yang yoga's primary focus is muscle lengthening and muscle contraction. The emphasis is on the muscle itself. Yin yoga focuses on working the connective tissues, such as the ligaments and tendons. More specifically, the ligaments and tendons of the pelvis, hip and lower back area are worked.

Why Should You Practice Yin Yoga?

During a yang practice, or even regular exercise such as jogging or resistance training, we are engaging our muscles in repetitive movements. This repetition breaks the muscle fibers down in order to build back up. This scenario is ideal for toning the muscles to give them definition. However, this is just part of the puzzle. Making sure the tissues that connect the muscle to the bone are healthy and malleable is extremely important.

These positions help to ensure the connective tissues are properly aligned. In addition, this strengthens the joints by creating space that allow for better and safer range of motion. This reduces the risk of potential injury that exercises focusing on muscular contraction can cause. When the joints have accumulated tension, the risk for injury is high if it is not addressed. Yin yoga can pay a huge part in releasing joint tension and opening the body.

When Should You Practice Yin Yoga?

Ideally, the greatest benefits of Yin yoga are reaped when the muscles are not warm. The perfect time would be just upon waking. The reason being is that warm muscles will take the impact of the stretching away from the connective tissues, which is what you want to be working. You may also incorporate a Yin yoga session right before a regular exercise session or before a Yang yoga session. For women, the time of menses is also a great time to incorporate a Yin yoga session, as it is said to help conserve necessary energies.

Incorporating a yoga practice in which the focus is on strengthening and opening the joints and connective tissues is very important in reducing the risk of injury. It is also important to ensure bone health as our bodies age. Most exercise programs focus on working the muscles, but making sure the other tissues are worked simultaneously ensures you get a well-balanced, highly beneficial work out. This balance will keep our bodies healthy for years to come.
